Lots have asked, so I thought I’d post about it: Thailand is almost completely Buddhist, as such, they don’t celebrate Christian holidays or any Western holidays. That being said, the commercial aspect of Christmas has not escaped the stores here. As you drive by malls, you’ll often see Christmas trees or Santa photos. In our exPat community, there are some Christmas lights and decorations put out. So while it doesn’t really feel like Christmas with the cold weather, lights, and music, we did have a wonderful Christmas with family.
It was great to see the kids really enjoy the giving part of presents. In fact, to be honest, they were more excited to give their gifts to their siblings and parents/grandparents than to open their own gifts. Love it.
Grandma Ball had promised our daughter that she’d go swimming on Christmas. Unfortunately, the day got away from them and before she knew it, it was pretty late and fairly cold (by Thailand standards – 70 degrees). True to her word, Grandma jumped in the cold pool with our daughter. When asked yesterday what her favorite memory of Grandma and Grandpa’s 3.5 week visit was, she said it was that Christmas night swim!
