We were still hopeful that maybe United could help us salvage our big family trip, so after getting some breakfast at a local bakery, we found a nearby park and the kids played while Candace spent another 1.5 hours on the phone with United. The agent was great, said he’d take care of it all, and assured us things would work out (refund us miles that weren’t used, fix the itinerary for returning to BKK, etc.) He said to call back on Monday to confirm the things he’d fixed. Great.
We spent the rest of the day hiking around Mong Kok’s parks, exploring the GREAT subway in Hong Kong, and getting over to see the famous nightly light show.
Let me pause here and praise Hong Kong some. It’s a city with more people per square foot than most anywhere in the world. Their subway system is the best I’ve ever been on. Anywhere. It’s fast (you wait 30 seconds between trains), easy to use (the signs show you digitally where you are, where you’re going, etc., and super efficient. We spent a lot of time on the subways.
The parks in Hong Kong are fabulous. The only place I’ve been that comes close is Portland’s parks. You’ll see lots of pictures of the parks as they are truly beautiful.

This park was really close to our flat and allowed the kids to stretch out some while we got the phones recharged again.

Hong Kong is built on mountains. Everywhere is up or down. We did a lot of stairs!

Our oldest doing what teenagers do if they’re not upright and Candace spending hours on the phone with United.

We found this cool “foot exercise” path in the King’s park. You take off your shoes and walk (slowly) on it and it “massages” your feet. I was only good for half a lap…
The flowers around the parks are great. While Hong Kong is a LOT of concrete, they make sure to put flowers in all the parks:
While hiking around the city, I was amazed to see bamboo used as scaffolding everywhere…and not just for 20-30 feet up. Some skyscrapers had it all the way to the top…unbelievable.
Here we are on the amazing subway. Check out the digital sign on the trains to show you where you are and where you’re going. Loved how easy and intuitive it is:
We caught a boat to take us out into the bay at night to watch the light show. Once again, amazed. I’m not an urbanite at all, but I fell in love with the beauty of Hong Kong:
And our oldest once again enjoying the sites…
Day 2 was a great start to our impromptu itinerary for Hong Kong and making up for the disappointment of not being able to go to Beijing.
